Why buy pre-owned unlocked smartphones, a smart compromise?

I'm constantly fielding why questions, they are coming at me from all angles (friends, family, clients, 3-year olds). The saying goes, "-but in this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes". I say death, taxes, and compromise.

Most of us start each day with a compromise, we don't get enough sleep or we don't eat a healthy breakfast. We think before compromising, probably not often enough. I own a smartphone company, have access to the best prices but the iPhone 4s was the last phone I bought new. I always choose pre-owned for myself (currently using the iPhone 8 that I got as "B Stock").

Let's suppose the best available is the iPhone X with 256GB. Purchasing through the best carrier in your area is usually the easiest transaction. Don't forget to add Apple Care, then pay the CAD$2,009.14 plus ~$140 per month for the best service bringing your total expense to own a cell phone to $3690 for 1 year. Since those dollars aren't always easy to come by many of us decide to compromise.

There are infinite options from free to $3,690. One extreme option would be a Google Voice, free. This one choice impacts an overwhelming percentage of our day, around 5 hours a day. Some people compromise by choosing a pay-as-you-go carrier and save $1000 a year (compare Chatr vs Bell). Compromise on the device itself by purchasing a low-end Android, an old refurbished iPhone, or Pre-Owned?

I advise everyone I know to choose Pre-Owned. I feel saving 10-50% off the price of new is well worth the small compromise and great for the environment. Personally, I spend a lot of time taking pictures and consuming content so a new low-end Android was out of the question. I choose the carrier with the best coverage in my area so I can avoid slow data speeds and dropped calls.

Have you considered saving money by purchasing a Pre-Owned smartphone? If you have and decided not to, why? I look forward to reading any comments.

Check back next week for my Pre-Owned vs Refurbished discussion including detailed information on where JP Mobiles Pre-Owned devices come from and steps taken with each device before we offer it for sale.
